Overhead Lighting is Awesome Because It’s Amazing To Be Able To See Stuff

turn up the lights, don't be shy.

The low-light, vibey, cool girl community is not going to be happy to hear this, but I can stay silent no longer. I say what I mean and I mean what I say: I like overhead lighting because I like to be able to see crap. Flame me if you’d like.

Overhead lighting is a light that is on the ceiling. This includes but not limited to: frosted orbs, any lights attached to a ceiling fan, or, if I’m lucky, a chandelier. The overhead lighting I’m defending does NOT include harsh LEDs. If a bulb is buzzing, it needs to stay away from me. You’re scary. I am in NO WAY defending school bathroom lighting. I am championing ONLY warm yellow overhead lights. If you get it twisted, you will be hearing from my lawyers.

Now, I love to spend time with my friends. It’s one of the most amazing parts about being a girl (32 years old, different timezone from my parents, buying cottage cheese for protein). Nothing lights my soul up more than getting an invite to have wine and discuss the inner workings of a particular friend group at one of my girl’s (gender neutral) homes. But from time to time, with increasing frequency, I show up to my friends’ home, and I cannot see their faces clearly. Where did my friend go? I can only see a dull glow of a lamp in the corner and the glass of wine being thrust into my hand. Where is the coaster? Is there a table near me? I have no idea. I panic – maybe my eyes aren’t adjusting, is something, perhaps, medically wrong with me – when I realize there is nothing for my eyes to adjust to. This is the lighting level. For the next few hours, a time I bravely enjoy because I love my friends, I can see only their teeth, piecing the rest of my gorgeous friends’ faces together from memory.
